Over 13 years ago The Dailey Method® was created and this is our story. Shortly after graduating from College in 1991 with a degree in Kinesiology, Jill Dailey McIntosh moved to San Francisco in her search for where to begin her career. Many different people helped direct her towards Pilates, which, at that time, was in the early stages of being publicly recognized. She completed the certified training for Pilates with The Pilates Guild and Physical Mind Institute, loved it, and practiced it both privately and semi-privately for the next 9 years. During this time she was able to train other teachers and also incorporate more traditional fitness training and rehabilitation work into her format.
After several years of running a Personal Training/Pilates business with a partner, she realized that what she really wanted to do was to help people reshape their bodies in a more assertive manner while still maintaining proper alignment and structure. What she didn’t realize is that through this process she would be able to help guide people beyond exercise so that it transferred throughout their day of standing taller, breathing deeper and feeling better. Jill also envisioned moving from teaching in a private setting to a class setting. She found the energy and camaraderie in a group environment to be a more effective model for most people.
Thanks to one of her faithful students who had studied Lotte Berk for years in New York, she was introduced to this concept of exercising in the mid-90's and quickly became intrigued and inspired by the possibilities. She visited New York several times and had the opportunity to take class and train with some of the amazing original Lotte Berk teachers. At this point, she determined that this type of group exercise was foundationally what she had been looking for. She returned to San Francisco and began to work at creating her own class using her kinesiology background and professional training experience, while also incorporating her own creative style enhanced by her early years as a dancer. This style has continued to evolve both creatively and therapeutically over the years as more and more research is done around the effectiveness of strong core conditioning.
Jill gets an incredible amount of fulfillment from what she does because not only does she love The Dailey Method, but it makes so many people happy and it gives them confidence. It also gives them a community. Sometimes it gives them a professional or a total lifestyle change. It’s affected so many people’s lives in an incredibly positive manner.
The original studio opened during the summer of 2000 in San Francisco Marina's District. This was the first barre class of it's kind on the West Coast and we have been open longer than any current barre studio.
The Dailey Method®, LLC is owned by Jill and her husband Doug. Doug had an 18-year career in advertising working with major U.S. brands prior to joining The Dailey Method full-time to run its business. They own and operate the Cow Hollow, Marin, and Downtown San Francisco studios. In 2009, they started a new franchise company TDM Franchising Company, LLC and held their first annual retreat with all the studio owners in Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2011, our first exercise video "No Excuses" that features two workouts in one DVD was released. Both have lived in the Bay Area for the past 22 years.
